Frequently Asked Questions
Q How long does counselling take?
There is no specific answer to this, some people choose to see a counsellor for a long time, others are happy with just a few sessions. Some people start counselling with a clear idea of how many sessions they want, while others decide as they go along. Either way, there is no expectation or obligation to continue with more sessions than you choose.
Q How does this kind of counselling work?
In humanistic and person-centred therapies the main focus of the counselling is decided by the client. The counsellor helps the process by asking questions and helping the client clarify the difficulty, and what they think and feel about it. Out of the exploration, new insights and perspectives often emerge. Research has shown this process is effective for a wide range of problems and issues.
Q What kind of clients does it suit?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists using a person-centred approach work with a wide range of clients on many different issues. It is often popular among clients who enjoy the freedom to talk about things they wish in a context that is supportive and facilitative, rather than those looking for specific techniques or tips on how to manage things.
Q How much does it cost?
Sessions with individuals and couples cost £50 in the daytime and £55 in the evening. Some concessionary spaces are available for individual sessions and the cost for these negotiated before the first meeting. Sessions usually last for one hour, sometimes requests are made for longer and the costs for these are pro rata. All charges are discussed and agreed before the first session.
Q How are payments made?
Payments can be made by cheque or in cash at the end of each session or by credit card online through the 'Service & Fees' page of this website. Online payments carry an additional 4% charge and are made in advance of sessions.
Q How quickly can I arrange an appointment?
Appointments can usually be made within a week, sometimes sooner. If you call and leave a message, you will usually have a response within 24 hours, often sooner.

I found counselling
incredibly helpful in
many ways. I needed
a calm place in which
I could explore difficult
feelings and Helene
created a non-
judgmental
environment where I
could explore any
thoughts or feelings
and learn to notice &
understand patterns I
had developed through
my life. Helene was calm
and thoughtful & gently
helped me in the
direction of a better
self-realisation. RH
This year of support with Helene has been
immensely & profoundly
helpful, enriching and
rewarding. I have learned
much about myself and
sensed the development
of a more mature inner
self. I have found
a way to comprehend my
feelings, live more truly
in the present ... What I
felt was given to me was an ‘emotional tool kit’.
This has allowed me to
experience a deeper
inner calm, a more
realistic positivity and
has opened my eyes to
a renewed creative
direction. MA
Counselling (with
Helene) helped
me recognise how
intense my life was
and helped me create
the space I needed
to 'breathe' again. It
helped me relax and
think about new ways
of making life that
little bit easier for
myself. Chloe
I felt I could share
even the most difficult
of situations in the
totally non-judgmental
and accepting space
Helene creates. I really
value her insight which
has an accuracy and
relevance to it which
reveal her deep level
of experience. EN
Helene offers a
non-judgmental
space where I feel
I am able to bring
my struggles, fears
& breakthroughs. EH
