Background
I have been working therapeutically with adults and children for more than 20 years. Starting work in social education and social care, I enjoyed most the offering of deeper therapeutic support. Taking this further, I studied at the Lincoln Institute for Psychotherapy and the University of London before setting up a private counselling practice. My interest in our human experience - what makes us who we are, and what goes on between us - goes back a long way.
Experience
I work therapeutically with adults: individually; in couples; and in groups, and have worked as a primary school children's counsellor. In others settings, I have worked with children using creative media as a form of exploration: a 'Wish Wall Project' to explore . . . wishes!; collages to describe images of self and others; drama to look at relationships.
As a counselling supervisor, I trained with Cascade Associates. I supervise experienced counsellors and counsellors-in-training, also devising trainee assessment processes for group supervision.
My work with organisations has included setting up counselling services, counsellor recruitment, service reviews, group supervision, counsellor-in-residence and ongoing counselling and emergency therapeutic support for staff. Specifically, I have worked in the fields of substance use and 'mental health'. I have worked as group supervisor with trainee counsellors at the City Lit and currently offer individual supervision to their trainees as well as to the RNIB telephone counselling service. I am currently working as tutor on Certificate Courses in Counselling Skills and Counselling Studies at Lambeth College.
I offer team development training to staff within different social care agencies and design various workshop materials and programmes including: counselling skills; co-facilitation and group work; assertiveness; stress; and working with difference.
As a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the British Association for the Person-Centred Approach, I work in accordance with their guidelines for ethics and good practice. I am an accredited member of the Counselling Society.
Approach
My approach to counselling is humanistic and encompasses the person-centred core conditions. I am also influenced by models of compassionate communication, energy work, ‘true self’ philosophies and family constellation work. I have completed training in Marshall Rosenberg's 'Nonviolent Communication'TM, energy healing and Body Tao (body psychotherapy).
My guiding beliefs are that we fundamentally want happiness for ourselves and others, that healing happens when we are deeply heard and we have an infinite, and surprising, capacity for creativity and resourcefulness!
I know Helene well as a fellow Place2Be counsellor and
as a friend. I have been impressed by her personal and
professional integrity and her rigorous commitment to
the work and to the clients. She delights in the complexity
and intellectual challenge of therapeutic work and takes
every opportunity to expand her knowledge and
expertise. She is gifted with compassionate, intuitive
insight. I have benefited greatly from her input in
supervision. Helene is a warm and inderstanding friend,
qualities that I am also sure enrich her professional life
